DBI Designated as Sub-Center for China-Africa Digital Technology Cooperation in West Africa

Nigeria has achieved significant progress in the ICT sector, with marked improvements in infrastructure and policy frameworks.

This assertion was made by the Group Head of Research, Innovation, and Consultancy at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Dr. Paulinus Okechukwu Ugwoke, during the 2024 BRICS Excellence Training Workshop on ICT and Digital Transformation held in Beijing, China.

In his presentation, Dr. Ugwoke highlighted several challenges facing Nigeria’s ICT sector, including gaps in digital literacy and skills, the high cost of data accessibility, and cybersecurity threats. He emphasised that addressing these issues is critical to unlocking the full potential of ICT for Nigeria’s economic and social development.

He identified key drivers of the digital economy in Nigeria as:

1. Infrastructure Development,

2. FinTech Innovation, and

3. Government Policies and Regulations.

According to Dr. Ugwoke, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) play pivotal roles in driving the digital economy. He noted that policies promoting data protection, cybersecurity, and innovation hubs have created a favorable environment for digital growth. He further lauded NCC’s initiatives aimed at expanding broadband access, with a target of achieving 70% penetration by 2025.

Dr. Ugwoke urged stakeholders to collaborate in advancing Nigeria’s ICT sector to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.

Recognition of DBI’s Role in Regional ICT Development

Following the workshop, the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) was recognized for its potential and officially designated as a sub-center in West Africa for the China-Africa Digital Technology Cooperation Center. This recognition underscores DBI’s capabilities in terms of infrastructure, expertise, and networks to drive the initiative effectively.

The “Action Plan for China-Africa Digital Cooperation and Development” presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its role in regional digital transformation. As a sub-center, DBI will align with the Action Plan’s goals while exploring avenues to deepen cooperation and drive technological advancement across Africa.
